Our Community Work admin
As a ‘not-for-private-profit’ social enterprise, our trading surpluses are invested into community–based projects that assist with social change or personal development for those that would not routinely be able to access such development. Here are some of the projects we have been involved in:
After holding a series of five confidence-building sessions with members of a local mental health charity, ProAction Development financed and facilitated a residential course for charity members designed to boost confidence and build skills. The underlying aim was for delegates to return home with the objective of forming and belonging to a new Peer Support Group. The intention of the newly formed group was to provide mutual support to each other within their own project and to develop communication skills and working relationships with other members. The overall aim was to develop a strong group that would act as a role model for setting up further groups throughout Somerset.
Programmes For Ex-Service Personnel
On leaving the forces, many service personnel struggle to adapt to civilian life. The vast difference in culture, a sudden sense of loss and purpose, having witnessed traumatic events, PTSD and other factors can all contribute to some men and women failing to find a niche in society, and in some cases, becoming depressed, developing addictions and resorting to crime.
ProAction Development and associates offered free programmes for ex-service personnel in Exeter with positive results. The delegates, placed by The Royal British Legion and Combat Stress, went on courses run over three consecutive days. They were matched with personal mentors, ex-service volunteers from the South West, who had successfully made the transition from forces to civilian living. An adaptation of our 10 Actions® To Transform Your Life Programme was developed to help delegates discover a new purpose for their lives, come to terms with their past and move on from it. The programme called, Moving Forward was very well received:
“The course was extremely good and it has given me the push I need to move into security work. Since doing this course, I have now done a security work course too.”
“The moving forward course is just what ex-service people are looking for to make the move to civvy-street much easier.”
Neighbour Learning In Deprived Communities
A group of Chard residents successfully completed a free 10-week personal development course adapted from our 10 Actions® To Transform Your Life Programme. The course, facilitated by ProAction Development staff, was partly funded by Somerset Skills and Learning with the aim of developing skills, and increasing self-esteem and self-confidence. This was achieved by raising aspirations, and by providing the tools and skills necessary to set and achieve attainable goals. The course covered topics such as motivation, decision-making, communications skills, confidence building, creative solutions and interpersonal development.
The Homeless Sector
We were delighted to deliver an adapted version of our 10 Actions® To Transform Your Life Programme to the service users of Alabaré Christian Care. An evaluation of the Alabaré project can be provided on request.
